OIDEL at the National Charter Schools Conference 2024

Boston, June | The National Charter Schools Conference (NCSC), organized by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, is renowned as the largest national education conference dedicated to charter schools. This year’s event, held in Boston from June 30 to July 3, brought together educators, advocates, and leaders from across the charter school movement to connect, share resources, and gain insights from nationally recognized experts. OIDEL was honored to participate in this influential conference, representing our ongoing commitment to promoting educational freedom and pluralism.

OIDEL’s presence at NCSC 2024 was marked by significant contributions from our team. Ignasi Grau, OIDEL’s director, presented the Freedom of Education Index 2023. This comprehensive index highlights the state of educational freedom across various nations, providing valuable insights into the global landscape of education policies and their impact on charter schools. Ignasi’s presentation underscored the importance of educational freedom in fostering diverse and innovative learning environments that can better serve students’ needs.

Joining Ignasi Grau on the stage was Robert Enlow of EdChoice and Robin Lake, director of the Center on Reinventing Public Education. Their collaborative presentation delved into the challenges and opportunities facing charter schools today, offering a multifaceted perspective on how educational freedom can drive positive change within the sector. This session was a pivotal moment in the conference, drawing attention to the critical role of policy and advocacy in shaping the future of charter schools.

Another highlight of OIDEL’s participation was the presentation by Ashley Berner, a member of our board. Ashley introduced her book, “Educational Pluralism and Democracy: How to Handle Indoctrination, Promote Exposure, and Rebuild America’s Schools.” Her work explores the intricate balance between maintaining educational diversity and ensuring democratic values within school systems. Ashley’s insights sparked meaningful conversations about how charter schools can navigate the complexities of providing diverse educational experiences while upholding democratic principles.

The NCSC 2024 provided an unparalleled platform for OIDEL to engage with fellow educators, policymakers, and advocates. Through our presentations and interactions, we were able to deepen our understanding of the current challenges and opportunities within the charter school movement. The conference reinforced our belief in the power of educational freedom and pluralism as catalysts for positive change in K-12 education.

As we reflect on our experience at NCSC 2024, we are inspired and energized to continue our advocacy for educational freedom. The insights and connections gained from this conference will undoubtedly shape our work in the coming years, driving us to further champion the cause of educational pluralism and innovation. OIDEL remains dedicated to empowering educators and students through the principles of freedom and diversity, and we look forward to future opportunities to collaborate with the vibrant charter school community.
